These programs are based on the award-winning book Zen Mind, Zen Horse: The Science and Spirituality of Working with Horses, by Allan J. Hamilton, MD (Storey Publishing, 2011), which was awarded the Nautilus Gold Award for spiritual works of non-fiction "that change the world one book at a time."

Prior Nautilus Gold winners include Deepak Chopra, Eckhart Tolle, and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Some of the concepts are also explored in Dr. Hamilton’s first book, The Scalpel and the Soul: Encounters with Surgery, the Supernatural, and the Healing Power of Hope (Tarcher/Penguin, 2008).

The Signature Seminars®

1. Zen Mind, Zen Horse: Right Brain vs. Left Brain: The Neuro-Equine Model© in Practice

This program puts an emphasis on getting participants to interact with horses in a unique supervised one-on-one session under the tutelage of world-renowned horseman and brain surgeon, Dr. Allan Hamilton. It also includes didactic seminar-style classroom work and group processing under the supervision of Dr. Jane Hamilton to help underscore the science behind the Neuro-Equine Model® and how to apply it in our partnership with horses and in our broader context of our lives in general. Interactive, immersive classroom exercises help participants discover how be selective about using right- or left-brain functions.

The program focuses on both the round pen and the arena for groundwork exercises with horses.  Participants receive individual and group demonstrations and coaching, and engage in a series of applications of right versus left-brain function in equine-facilitated exercises.

Concepts include the ARDP model (Ask, Request, Demand, and Promise), balancing the four cardinal directions of training (North-Empathy, East-Learning, South-Intention, West-Wisdom), the values of the round pen, the power of empathetic learning, the significance of intention, the four C's of leadership (Command, Control, Compassion, and Communication), grooming as mindful ceremony, patient leadership, leading from anywhere, simple measures of self-control, emotion versus intuition in equine-facilitated experiences, the use of chi in connecting and moving horses, facing one's fears, and building confidence.

More than 20 separate concepts and practices will be covered in the clinic. Individuals finish the program able to understand why and how to incorporate these lessons their own lives, careers, and endeavors.

4. Zen Mind, Zen Horse: From Barnyard to Boardroom - Learning the Power of Nonverbal Communication in Business

Rancho Bosque has worked on several longitudinal studies evaluating the impact of nonverbal communication and how horses can help us to understand this power.

This program explores nonverbal communication within business and corporate settings. It was developed in conjunction with faculty from the Eller MBA Program and Eller College of Management or the University of Arizona.

Effective communicators and negotiators learn to use and interpret body language cues. Through specially designed equine facilitated activities, participants explore nonverbal communication.  Vital issues that arise during negotiation and other business related processes are explored with the help of horses and professional staff.

Deal breaking and deal-making "tells" are often vital for successful business negotiations. Individual and group activities with horses explore business and management such as: what to do when the other side threatens to leave the table, give and take in outlining needs, the use of promise and request techniques, yielding to get concessions, learning how to maintain engagement, and how to detect honesty or deception.

Who should attend? Group leaders, teachers, executives, business owners, human resource teams, employers, managers, work groups

In collaboration with the University’s of Arizona’s College of Medicine, Rancho Bosque has developed the world’s first and premiere program using equine facilitated resources for healthcare professionals to enhance communication and improve bedside manner.  The program developed at Rancho Bosque has now been reproduced in medical schools in the United States and around the world.

During this course, exercises and interaction with horses explore health care related interactions such as: the use of “predictable touch” during the physical examination, body language during elicitation of medical history and review of systems, the power of active listening, approaching fearful procedures, the significance of body language during emergencies (such as “codes” and trauma resuscitations). In addition, the importance of nonverbal communication in building confidence, leadership, and effective interpersonal communication is emphasized.

Who should attend?  Healthcare professionals, doctors, nurses, medical students, medical teams, hospice workers.

This is an internationally renowned equine-facilitated course designed for cancer patients, cancer survivors, and families living with cancer, developed in conjunction with Sunstone Cancer Support and the Arizona Cancer Center.

This program explores the emotional and spiritual principles that can assist individuals in their personal journeys to integrate cancer care, cure, and survival into their way of life, their way of seeing, and their way of being. The program focuses on the emotional, psychic, and spiritual issues that surround struggling with cancer.

Individuals are assisted as they engage in specially selected interactions with horses to develop unique strategies that they can apply in their own cancer journeys. The program is invaluable to patients, care providers, and family members who deal with cancer on a regular basis. Group processing is a vital component of the course, and healthcare professionals are encouraged to participate.

7. Zen Mind, Zen Horse: Selecting & Training Horses for Equine Assisted Therapy and Learning

This program was developed to help horse professionals increase their skills along with the abilities of their horse partners.  It begins with a seminar on the horse handling, selection, and training for Equine Assisted Therapy and Learning (EAT/L).

In round pen and arena sessions, participants will explore the features to look for when choosing a horse for equine facilitated programs.  Further activities address “making the most of the horse you’ve got.”  Participants will learn to assess horses as they work in the round pen and the arena. The program will use multiple horses for each participant to enhance each participant’s ability to quickly assess a horse’s suitability for a particular session and how to quickly and fluidly develop strategies to work with a horse’s personality rather than fight it.

Participants who would like to bring one or more horses to the program are encouraged to contact us directly to discuss their goals with the course directors.

This program will also explore medical and legal aspects, safety and documentation, the role of the horse professional in Equine facilitated programming, adapting your horse to arena and group games for EAT/L.

Who should attend? Horse professionals, equine specialists, horse trainers, therapists, riding instructors, teachers.

Experience:

No experience with horses is necessary for participation in these programs. There are no mounted activities.  Those with or without horse experience will benefit from these experiences, and both are welcomed and encouraged to participate. These courses are designed to provide maximal benefit from immersion in the equine-facilitated groundwork. Throughout the course, individuals will have the opportunity to work with sensitively trained horses under the supervision of skilled equine specialists and licensed clinical professionals to ensure maximal benefit from individual and group interactions.  Our highly trained equine professionals will also endeavor to maintain safety and comfort throughout these equine-related programs.  We have dealt with novices from age 5 to age 85. Feel free to call our office if you have any questions.

The Drs. Hamilton are able to travel world-wide to your location to suit the needs of your program, group or facility.

Any of the Signature Seminars® can be brought to your facility.  Likewise, the Hamiltons can customize a program to meet your needs at your facility or ours (such as eating disorders, health issues, family issues, team building). All described courses can be provided in a one, two or three day format. If you or your program has a unique set of needs for a program, please contact us at info@ranchobosque.com for further information. The equine-assisted programs offered by Drs. Hamilton have been featured in such publications as Western Horseman, Equus, Practical Horseman, Spirituality and Health, as well as on PBS, CNN, and NBC television.

Drs. Jane and Allan Hamilton have written and taught extensively about the Neuro-Equine Model©, and how the deep emotional bond between horse and human develops. This connection is not simply affection, but is also an interaction between complementary evolutionary biologies and strategies (namely, prey versus predator).

When human beings interact with horses, they are drawing on right-brain intuitive and emotional capabilities rather than the language, verbally dominant abilities of left cerebral hemispheres. The seven courses described above are the Signature Rancho Bosque programs.

They are unlike any other equine-facilitated program anywhere else in the world.
